The Best Science Fiction of the Year #8 is an anthology of science fiction short stories and novelettes edited by Terry Carr. The book collects 12 stories that were originally published in 1978 and includes essays by Carr and Charles N. Brown.
The anthology includes stories and essays. Notable entries include "The Barbie Murders" by John Varley, which won the Locus Poll Award and the James Tiptree, Jr. Award. Other stories with nominations or awards include "The Very Slow Time Machine" by Ian Watson, "Count the Clock That Tells the Time" by Harlan Ellison, "View from a Height" by Joan D. Vinge, and "The Man Who Had No Idea" by Thomas M. Disch.
First published in paperback in July 1979 by Del Rey Books, hardcover editions were also released by Del Rey Books and the Science Fiction Book Club in August 1979, and by Gollancz in the UK.
