In the year 1806, there was cold war with Spain along the Mississippi. Then Aaron Burr dreamed his dream of Mexico and empire, of gold and glory. Then Burr, shunned by Jefferson, the usual roads to power in the East denied him, made his historic journey by flatboat down the Ohio and the Mississippi, appealing to the West to join him. With him as he moved down the river on that amazing voyage went his daughter, Theodosia, arrogant and as devoted to her father as he was to himself. With him also - and this fact is not so well know to history - went a young frontiersman of twenty-two called Hugh Shadwell. This young man was Burr's hostage to the future.

The tale of the tempestuous relationship between the two untamed men, of the long battle of wills which boiled beneath the surface of their mutual understanding, or Theodosia's jealousy of Hugh, is a story as profoundly interesting as that other tale of conspiracy and the smell of treason which accompanies it.
