Elminster Must Die is a 2010 fantasy novel by Ed Greenwood, the first in the "Sage of Shadowdale" series. The book follows a weary, mortal Elminster who is targeted by enemies after the murder of the goddess Mystra, while also trying to care for his lover, the Simbul, who needs to consume magical items to stay sane. 
Plot: The story takes place after the Spellplague, with Elminster being a much older and more vulnerable figure than in his prime. His enemies, including the Bloodshields Band and War Wizards, are hunting him, and their pursuit is aided by the risky magical items he collects for the Simbul.
