Candide is a satirical novella by the French Enlightenment writer Voltaire, first published in 1759. The story follows the naive Candide as he endures a series of misfortunes, which challenge his tutor Dr. Pangloss's optimistic philosophy that they live in "the best of all possible worlds". Through his travels and suffering, Candide becomes disillusioned with abstract theories and ultimately learns to focus on practical work and personal cultivation, summarized by the famous concluding advice: "we must cultivate our garden".
